Sativa Weed Strains Contain Higher Amounts of Farnesene and Bergamotene

Some may buy Sativa weed because of its energizing effects, but a recent study shows that the effects of Sativa are not different from Indica. An analysis of over 100 cannabis samples indicated that Sativa—and Indica-labelled samples were genetically indistinct. Researchers found that cannabis labelling was associated with variations in several terpenes.

The study highlighted that Sativa weed strains contain higher amounts of sweet and herbal terpenes, farnesene and bergamotene. Both terpenes exhibit promising human health and wellness potential.

Labels on Sativa Marijuana Strains Can Be Misleading

The cannabis culture has given Sativa cannabis plant and Indica weed specific labels that most people use when making a purchase. Some people firmly believe that Sativa strains are known for their stimulating effects. They use these strains during the daytime to enhance alertness and provide an energetic high.

Cannabis Sativa weed strains features:

  • Uplifting and Energizing Effects: Ideal for combating fatigue and boosting positive energy.
  • Stimulating Effects: Beneficial for creative activities and social gatherings.
  • Higher THC Content: Sativa plants have more THC, which contributes to their potent psychoactive effects.
  • Thin, Tall Plants: Sativa cannabis plants grow taller and have narrower leaves than their Indica counterparts (the only feature that cultivators can use to differentiate Sativa and Indica).

Terpenes in Cannabis

Terpenes are aromatic compounds seen in many plants, including cannabis. They are essential in the plant’s aroma, flavour, and effects.

  • Myrcene: Earthy and musky, common in Indica strains.
  • Limonene: Citrus scent found in both Sativa and Indica.
  • Caryophyllene: Spicy and peppery, present in various strains.
  • Pinene: Pine scent known for its alertness-enhancing properties.

Cannabis produces hundreds of aromatic terpenes that influence consumer preferences and are associated with Sativa and Indica labels. Evidence also suggests that a cultivar’s terpene profile affects its psychoactive properties.

Farnesene and Bergamotene in Sativa Strains

Farnesene and bergamotene are the other two terpenes particularly present in Sativa strains. These terpenes contribute to the unique characteristics of Sativa cannabis:

CompoundAroma and FlavourEffectsFound In
FarneseneSweet, green apple-like aromaMay provide calming and anti-inflammatory benefitsMany Sativa-dominant Hybrid strains and pure Sativa strains.
BergamoteneHerbal, tea-like scent with fresh and citrusy flavourPotential anti-inflammatory and pain relief propertiesCommon in popular Sativa strains such as Sour Diesel, Jack Herer, and Lemon Haze.

Research Study on Cannabis Labelling

Indica and Sativa labels, along with strain names, often mislead. This situation resembles a game of broken telephones, where the original meanings become distorted over time. Although Indica and Sativa labels describe distinct species, they indicate psychoactive effects, aromas, and plant morphology due to hybridization.

There is a growing need for more accurate labelling that communicates the effects and chemical makeup of cannabis strains. The current labelling system needs to be improved compared to the standards applied to other crops.

Sophie Watts, a PhD student in Plant, Food, and Environmental Sciences at Dalhousie University, led a study to understand the validity of Indica and Sativa labels. The study, conducted in collaboration with Bedrocan International, analyzed hundreds of cannabis strains labelled as Indica or Sativa.

Findings from Strain Analysis

The research measured each strain’s chemical compounds (THC, CBD, and terpenes) and genetic profiles. Using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, they paired these data with 116,296 newly generated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from 137 samples that provided sufficient high-quality DNA for extraction.

The Result:

  • Indica and Sativa labels do not reliably indicate distinct groups of cannabis.
  • Cultivar names were unreliable indicators of a sample’s genetic or chemical identity.
  • Genetic differences influenced variations in a few specific terpenes linked to these labels in terpene synthase genes.
  • Sativa content positively correlated with the concentrations of bergamotene and farnesene, which contribute to tea-like and fruity aromas, respectively. This aligns with descriptions of Sativa cultivars as having a ‘sweet’ or ‘herbal’ aroma.
  • The strongest correlation was between Indica and myrcene, with myrcene concentration explaining 21.2% of the variation in labelling.

Terpene Comparison: Sativa vs. Indica

People classify Indica and Sativa plants using traditional definitions: Sativas have energizing effects, while Indica plants are more relaxing. Reducing cannabis to just its effects does not capture its incredible versatility and potential. Recent studies show that terpenes more accurately identify Indica and Sativa plants.

In the study above, researchers also observed positive correlations between Indica labelling and three sesquiterpenes: γ-eudesmol, guaiol, and β-eudesmol. These three sesquiterpenes are associated with Afghanistan plants, the region of origin for Indica cultivars.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best way to use Sativa strains?

  • Smoking: Provides immediate effects, ideal for quick energy boosts or relief. Methods include joints, pipes, or bongs.
  • Vaping: Delivers quick effects similar to smoking but is gentler on the lungs. Portable vape pens are convenient for on-the-go use. You can also vape a Sativa flower with a table-top dry herb vaporizer.
  • Edibles: Offer a delayed onset (30 minutes to 2 hours) with longer-lasting effects (4 to 6 hours). They are discreet and ideal for those who prefer not to inhale. Before producing an edible, you’ll need to decarboxylate the flower first to activate the THC content.
  • Tinctures: Administered under the tongue, effects happen in 15 to 30 minutes. Provide precise dosing.
  • Capsules: Provide a delayed and prolonged effect, similar to edibles, and are easy to dose. Ideal for those who prefer a smoke-free option.

What medical benefits do bergamotene and farnesene contribute to many Sativa strains?

Farnesene has solid anti-inflammatory properties. It reduces inflammatory cytokines, which can aid in pain relief and decrease inflammation. It also has sedative properties that promote deep, restful sleep and could be used to treat insomnia.

Bergamotene exhibits notable anti-inflammatory effects. One of its standout benefits is its effectiveness in inhibiting the spread of cancer cells. It is cytotoxic to cancer cells, which underpins its anti-tumor properties. This ability to target cancer cells can help reduce tumours’ size and spread.

Are bergamotene and farnesene common terpenes in cannabis?

Bergamotene and farnesene have larger structures, which makes them less volatile and results in a stronger fragrance than monoterpenes. They are present in smaller concentrations. While you commonly find these terpenes in Sativa strains, they are less prevalent than myrcene, limonene, or caryophyllene.

Can terpenes commonly found in Indica strains also be present in Sativa cannabis species?

Categorizing terpenes as strictly Indica or Sativa can be misleading. Two strains might have the same terpenes but in very different ratios, which can lead to varying effects despite similar terpenes. While you can find certain terpenes in Sativa strains, they are often present in much higher quantities in Indica strains.
